“Everything
the estate agent said he would be doing to effect the sale, I
managed to do perfectly well with no training and managed to
save £7,500 in fees!”
James from Cornwall told us how he sold his house privately using
HouseWeb
“I
needed to sell my house in order to be closer to work. After six
weeks of no offers with an estate agent I thought I might as
well give selling privately a go for a few weeks. It was the
first time I tried
to sell privately.
We looked at
loads of websites before choosing HouseWeb, but decided on them
because we liked the look of of their website. It seemed the
most upmarket, which was important for the price and location of
the property we were selling.
We
sold the house for less than the estate agent’s valuation but
we believe they had overvalued
our property just to get our business. Maybe that’s why six
weeks went by with little interest! However, we sold it at for
£10,000 more than two other valuations and saved ourselves £7,500 in
estate agents fees. We
felt that the estate agent would have taken another 2-3 months
to sell ours so we were able to come down in price as we were
not only saving on agency fees but also on 3 months of mortgage
repayments.
We
weren’t put off by having to deal with the buyer directly. It
wasn’t too bad at all. In fact, I found the process quite
interesting. Everything the estate agent said he would be doing
to effect the sale, I managed to do perfectly well with no
training. I think the For Sale board is a ‘must have’,
particularly if people drive or walk past your house
often. I think a lot of people don’t realise that even if you
are already using an agent, you can go private as well. My
advice would be – do both!”
