“We
had
nothing to lose but everything to gain by going it alone!”
Jane King from Essex told us about her first experience
of selling without an agent
“We hadn’t sold privately
before, but after trying with an estate agent we were
dissatisfied
with their service in terms of feedback etc, so decided we had
nothing to lose but everything to gain by going it alone.
We chose HouseWeb and found the site extremely easy to
use and Customer Services very helpful. We chose the Platinum
package which included the upload to other sites, 20 photos and
a For Sale Board, which generated a few enquiries. We were
pleased with that as the house is set back from the road and the
board was not that easy to see.
It took a while to sell because we had a few buyers who
pulled out at the last minute due to problems along the chain.
We eventually sold for about the same price as the agent valued
the house and saved around £8,000.
Using an agent is not necessarily the wrong decision
and can certainly be successful. You can of course do both
at the same time. However,
there are considerable savings to be made selling privately via
HouseWeb, plus we found it to be less stressful and felt much
more in control than using an agent.
I would say that when selling your own house you need
to be flexible for viewings particularly during the winter
months as often the house needs to be viewed during the day.
Negotiating is not easy but you do get better as you go
along.”
